Bicycling is a quiet, affordable, and healthy way to travel. It's also an antidote to traffic congestion, noise and air pollution. Bikes aren't just for fun anymore. A growing number of people are choosing to commute on non-motorized wheels. No need to waste time “hunting” for a parking space when you bike to campus. UNCG is in the process of implementing a bike plan which will significantly increase the quantity and quality of bike parking facilities throughout our nearly 200 acre campus. Registering your bicycle for use on campus will automatically enroll you in the Spartan Bicycle Club with benefits including: |
| •Bike shop coupons & discounts
•Earn Commute Credits to win prizes •Emergency Ride Home (PART service) •Exercise/stress reduction for health & well being •Impact funding for additional bike facilities & services •Increase likelihood of recovery if bike is lost/stolen |
•Monthly brown bag discussions •Reduce traffic congestion & air pollution •Repair clinics, safety seminars, & educational programs •Social networking with other cyclists •Utilize bike lockers & shower facilities - under construction |
Each bicycle registered leads to increased funding for additional bike facilities on campus. You can make a difference – register today!

Cyclists are required to register their bikes for use on campus. The registration process is free and takes only a few minutes. Each bicycle registered leads to increased funding for additional bike facilities on campus so the process is very important for the benefit of all campus cyclists. Registration is also important in recovering lost or stolen bikes. Registration forms are available online and in the Parking Operations & Campus Access Management (POCAM) office adjacent to the Walker Avenue Parking Deck.
To complete the registration process, you will need to know: • Serial number usually located under bottom bracket of bike • Frame size see photo for measuring instructions • Wheel size usually listed on the bike tire If you have any difficulty finding this information, please bring your bike to the Parking Operations & Campus Access Management (POCAM) office so our staff may assist you and take a photo of the bike. |
Once registered, you will be issued a 2-piece bike permit sticker. The larger sticker is to be placed on the longest bar of the bike frame. The smaller sticker may be placed in a location of your choice; under the seat or another discreet area.
Your UNCG ID is your Spartan Bicycle Club membership card which can be presented for discounts at participating bike shops. Your UNCG ID is also your free pass to ride GTA and HEAT buses without paying fares. Without a valid UNCG ID, standard bus fare is $1.30 per trip.

Kryptonite U-lock
|
Please secure your bicycle to an appropriate parking facility (bike loop or bike rack) using a sturdy lock. Standard facilities accommodate two bikes per loop. Using a U-lock with a 6-foot cable or chain (the thicker the better)
will allow you to lock your bike to any style loop or rack and secure
your wheels too. However, be aware that chains and cables may be cut
so never entrust your bicycle to a simple cable or chain lock alone. |
Bike Parking Tips
•Only park at a bike loop or bike rack.
•If a bike loop/rack is full, find another loop/rack.
•Two locks are better than one so use a U-lock with a heavy 6 foot chain.
•Do not risk damage or theft by securing your bike improperly.
•Never leave accessories or loose items on your bike.
Plans for Additional Bike Facilities
UNCG is in the process of implementing a bike
plan which will significantly increase the quantity and quality of bike parking
facilities throughout our nearly 200 acre campus. Also, lockers and shower facilities
for cyclists have been incorporated into the LEED certified
design of the new classroom building currently under construction near the Bryan
School of Business & Economics. The facility will open in 2011.
Abandoned
Bikes
If left unattended, a bicycle may be tagged as abandoned. If the bicycle is
registered, an attempt will be made to contact the bike owner for verification.
If the bike is not registered or the bike owner cannot be contacted, campus
police may remove the bike for storage in a campus warehouse. This abatement
process is performed on an ongoing basis around campus. Please register your
bike so you can be notified in case it is tagged as abandoned.
Lost or Stolen Bikes
If your bike is lost or stolen, please contact UNCG
Public Safety & Police to file a police report. You will be asked to provide your bicycle registration
number, serial number, and a description of your bike (make, model, size, and
color).
If you witness a bike theft or other crime in progress, go to the nearest blue emergency phone to contact the police. If you are calling from a campus land line phone, the emergency phone number is 44444. If you are calling from a cell phone, call (336) 334-4444. The non-emergency phone number is (336) 334-5963.
Residence Hall Bicycle Policy
The majority of residence halls have bicycle racks located near the entrance
of the building for proper bike storage. Bike storage is also permitted inside
a resident’s room. If a resident’s bike is found elsewhere, s/he
will be asked to remove the bike immediately. If the bike is not removed
within 24 hours, campus police will impound the bike. Bicycles should never
be ridden inside campus buildings.

Loading and unloading bicycles on HEAT and GTA vehicles is the sole responsibility
of the rider. As your bus approaches, please have your bike ready to load
and secure any loose items on the bike. Once the vehicle comes to a stop,
notify your bus operator you will be loading a bicycle onto the bus bicycle
rack. From the curbside, lower the light-weight rack and lift your bike
into position in the rack’s wheel wells. Pull the support arm out
and up over the front tire of the bike. Then board the bus and be seated.
HEAT and GTA are not responsible for your bicycle while in transit. Once
you reach your destination, advise the bus operator you will be removing
your bike from the rack. To unload your bike, follow the loading instructions
in reverse. |
PART bike racks are easy to use and best of all your bike rides for free! Exterior bike racks may be used a first-come, first-serve basis with a limit of two bicycles per bus. Larger buses have stow-and-go storage below. Please remove anything loose from your bike that may possibly fall off during the trip. For safety and security reasons, the bus operator is not permitted to leave the bus to assist with the loading or uploading of bicycles. You are responsible for loading, securing, and unloading your bike in a safe and timely manner. Securement arms are provided and must be used to hold the bike in place during travel. For your safety when leaving the bus, remember to let the bus operator know you plan to unload your bike. Never step into the street side of the bus when loading or unloading your bike.
| •ABC Quick Check
before you ride •Always wear a helmet •Do not ride on the sidewalk •Do not use a cell phone while riding •Obey all traffic laws at all times •Register your bike for use on campus •Ride at a safe speed for conditions •Ride in the same direction as traffic |
•Ride on the right
side of the roadway •Stop at stop signs and red lights •Use bike lanes where available •Use hand signals •Use lights when riding after dark •Watch for turning cars •Yield right of way •Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks |
While riding your bicycle, obey all traffic laws at all times. First and foremost, buy and wear a bicycle helmet to greatly reduce the risk of head injury or death. Don't "hit the road" without one! However, be aware that even the best helmet has limitations. Understanding rider responsibilities, rules of the road, and defensive cycling strategies are the keys to bicycle safety.
Every person riding a bicycle has all the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of motor vehicles. Riders may be cited for unsafe behavior (running stop signs, riding at an unsafe speed for conditions, riding on the wrong side of the road or on sidewalks, etc.).
Cyclists riding at night are encouraged to wear light clothing and use front white lights, rear red reflectors and flashers, pedal and side reflectors.
For detailed safety information, download and read A Guide to North Carolina Bicycle and Pedestrian Laws published by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Club members are invited to a variety of activities including brown bag discussion groups, cyclist appreciation events, repair clinics, safety seminars, and other programs. Participants earn Commute Credits which qualify you to win bicycle friendly prizes.
In case of an emergency (personal illness or family crisis), remember the
PART Emergency Ride Home program so you won't be stranded without transportation.
